Description
Fifi was recently moved from Maine to France, refurbished and now sailing the classic mediterranean circuit.
The yacht FIFI R 41 is an excellent example of an R Class Sloop built to the Universal
Rule. FIFI was commissioned in 1924 by the American Industrialist Henry Maxwell
of Larchmont, New York, to race in the Long Island Sound Fleet.
Mr. Maxwell chose the celebrated William Fife III of Fairlie, Scotland to design his yacht.
FIFI is Fife Design Number 735. The renowned Henry Nevins Yard of City Island, New York
built her.
Launched in April, 1925, FIFI made a name for herself in the R Boat Fleet of Long Island Sound.
Her racing career was well documented in the New York Times and by iconic marine photographers
Morris Rosenfeld, and Edwin Levick. Kathy Mansfield and Alison Langley have graced calendars,
advertisements and magazines with FIFI’s images.
FIFI eventually made her way to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where she was purchased in 1994 by Jim Ross. She was sailed there for twenty-four years.
